Local artisan profiled on Discovery Channel

BY ROSS BROWARNIK

If you were a movie director searching for someone who looked the role of a rugged individualist, Central Casting couldn’t do better than choose Barry Massin. With his thick crop of gray hair and "Schweppervescent" style beard, the tall, lanky Massin fits the bill to a "t."

Barry Massin’s art of choice, however, doesn’t happen to involve the cinema. Although much like a good movie, his uncommon artistic creations can unquestionably be characterized as "dramatic" and "mesmerizing".

Home guru Lynette Jennings obviously thinks so.

The Coconut Grove industrial artist and Pinecrest resident is being featured on an episode of the popular Discover Channel program "Lynette Jennings, Design". The segment, which was filmed earlier this year in Massin’s eclectic Grove studio/workshop, has already aired several times on the cable network.

The final scheduled airing is Thursday, September 9th at 2 p.m.

During the segment, Barry Massin takes Ms. Jennings on a tour of his large, machine and curio-packed creative habitat, which she calls one of the most remarkable work spaces she has even seen. Viewers are introduced to some of the raw materials and machinery the artist uses to hand-craft his natural objects d’ art. While Massin works with a variety of media such as stone, metal and acrylics, he favors self-replenishing materials — particularly South Florida palm and Dade County pine — because of their intricate grains and distinctive textures.

A meticulous yet prolific craftsman’ Massin, 56, turns out an incredible array of palm and pine-based products: everything from intricate custom furniture, crown molding, trim and veneers to utilitarian items including pencil holders, letter openers, bookends, humidors, walking sticks and canes. He even fashions natural brushes from coconut husks.

"I use only vegetation that has long been dead or has been discarded by homeowners or developers," Barry Massin points out. "It’s not uncommon for me to pull my Ram Charger off to the side of the road so I can toss in a pine trunk or a bunch of coconuts.

"I guess you can say I’m sort of nature’s recycler."

Barry Massin can be seen on Lynette Jennings, Design, airing Sept. 9 at 2 p.m., on Discovery Channel. A similar segment is also appearing regularly on Home & Garden TV’s "Modern Masters" series. Check your local listings for times.
