Our Mayor has also received some "high profile" coverage. I was surprised when a friend, who lives in Coral Gables, asked me if I had seen "the mayor in the magazine". Yes, Pinecrest Mayor Evelyn Greer, was one of five South Florida women featured this summer in the national womens magazine, More from Ladies Home Journal. While it was a light piece, on surviving South Floridas summer heat, it was exciting to see her featured. I always make time to browse through the United Ways news letter, not only to read about the agencys work, but because I know that I will likely see a familiar face and Pinecrest resident. Hilarie Bass, who just a few weeks ago was featured in the Pinecrest Tribune as a "Positive Person in Pinecrest," has held the high profile position of chairperson for the United Way of Miami-Dade county for the passed two years. Her work with the organization helps enrich the lives of many people in this community. I was pleased to read that Bass successor, Joe Lacher, is also a Pinecrest resident and President of Bellsouth. Sara Hearld, the governors appointee to replace Anita Block as head of the Department of Children and Family Services for Miami-Dade county, is also a Pinecrest resident. I am discouraged that she has decided not to take the position permanently. Of all the "high profile" positions held by residents of Pinecrest, Hearlds position held the most hope for the abused, misguided, and neglected youth in the Miami-Dade community. I serve as a member of the board of directors for the Miami Bridge, a shelter for teenagers, and I must say that I am very disheartened that the system has lost such a respected, dedicated and altruistic lady. However, I am sure that the Childrens Home Society is elated to know she will soon be back at the helm of their agency. People (especially my own children) regularly ask me if I am concerned about running out of individuals to feature as Positive People in Pinecrest. Admittedly, some weeks are more difficult than others; however I really do feel that per-capita we have an outstanding number of people who know the meaning of giving back to the community. And to all those who make both large and small contributions, you may not be "high profile," but your efforts enrich this community.
