Adam Sampson and Giroldy Koning practice spinning at Pinecrest Health and Fitness where the Second Annual Spin For AIDS will take place on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Spinning, for those who have never experienced it, is riding on a sleek fixed exercise bike to acquire cardiovascular fitness. The enjoyable ride is done to music, in various seated and standing positions to keep the exercise class interesting. Beginners may stop anytime when fatigued and continue on when able. Experienced riders spin continuously for set periods of time.

You don’t need to be a rider to help with this project. Everyone is welcomed.

"Some people hang out the whole day," said Adam Sampson, one of the chairmen of this worthy activity. "Come on by to watch or just to make a donation. There will be a raffle going on and food donated by area merchants."

Sampson and Giroldy Koning, both certified personal trainers and fitness experts, and Carlos Sanchez, a Miami-Dade County policeman and certified spin instructor, are co-chairing the event. Sanchez joined last year when the class at Pinecrest Health and Fitness raised nearly $5,000. These instructors and many others will donate their time on Sunday to lead the classes and instruct participants.

"We’re very happy having it again this year," said Mike Singer one of the owners of the gym. "It got the whole community involved. We’re proud of Adam and are happy to sponsor the ride."

Diane Mourin, a manufacturer of a line of gourmet bird food sold through Publix Supermarkets, and who participated last year, is enthusiastic about the "Spin For AIDS."

"It was great," she said. "It was well organized. There were many instructors, so you are not limited to one instructor. I enjoyed spinning and it was a good cause."

This year’s ride will last all day. You may ride for as long as you want or are able for a donation of $25.

The neighborhood spin at the Pinecrest Health and Fitness gym will channel into the Walgreens Ride 2000, which takes place Mar. 31-Apr. 2, 2000. A 275-mile standard bike ride from Orlando to Miami raises additional donations, which will be divided and presented to six different charities.

Beginners as well as expert cyclists are to ride in the Walgreens Ride 2000. SAG (Support And Gear) vehicles travel with the riders. Tired riders are given a lift. All have pledged a donation with moneys raised by events such as this "Second Annual Spin For AIDS" or through house parties, asking friends for donations or other creative ways to raise the required $1,200 required of each participant. All participants meet at the end for a victory party.

On Nov. 7, Koning and Sampson are donating all money raised by their Hydrossage massage machine appointments.

Pinecrest Health and Fitness is located in the Suniland Shopping Center, 11219 S. Dixie Hwy. It is not too late to become involved. For more information or to sign up for the spin class; donate a raffle prize, money or other goods in this fight for life and hope, call Adam Sampson or Giroldy Koning at 305-233-4896.
