Step In With The Right Foot for Chai 5-K Walk

BY ROBIN KASKEL

On May 11, hundreds of women throughout Miami-Dade County will put on their comfortable clothes and sneakers to join in for the second annual Chai (Life) 5-K "Walk For Me" event at the Eden Roc Hotel on Miami Beach.

Organized by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Women's Division, monies raised from the three mile walk will benefit four UJA/GMJF agencies that support the elderly, Russian resettlement programs, The New Faces of Aliyah and children. Each sector of Women's Division will take on an agency; the southwest area is focusing on children's needs - Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Day Schools, High School in Israel, Passport to Israel and March of the Living.

It's a shoe-in for (l-r) Susan Silver, area outreach rep; Mindy Wilner, walk co-chair; and southwest GMJF Women's Division reps Barbara Davis and Debbie

"Not only does this event raise funds for important humanitarian and educational causes, it is also very comfortable to attend," explained Southwest area representative and Pinecrest resident Debbie Siegel. "It is an incredible feeling to see everyone in shorts and t-shirts, looking similar and all walking for the same cause."
Siegel and her co-chair, Barbara Davis, worked on the event together last year.
"It's a good way to get women involved at an introductory level," Davis explained.

"People who didn't go last year were sorry; the women who did attend, loved it," exclaimed Davis, also a new Pinecrest resident.

The event replaced a yearly luncheon which had been held at Temple Bet Shira for a number of years.
"This entry-level campaign event brings all four areas of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Women's Division together," explained Mindy Wilner of Pinecrest. Wilner is co-chairing "Walk For Me" with Robin Kettler and Anne Sheldon. "Because the walk is fresh, healthy and casual, we are able to reach out to all populations," Wilner said. "Especially to women who have not given previously or who have not been involved with GMJF."

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Eden Roc Gymnasium, 4525 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach. The walk will commence at 10:00 a.m. on the Miami Beach Boardwalk after a continental breakfast and short program. At noon, lunch will be served to all participants. Couvert is $36 per person plus a $118 gift to the 2000 UJA/Federation's Women's Campaign. Breakfast, lunch, door prizes and a walk tank-shirt are included. Bus service is available from sites in North and South Dade.

For reservations or information, please contact Monica Loebl at 305/576-4000, ext. 273 or visit the GMJF Web site at www.JewishMiami.org. Hope to see you there!.
