Dr. Berkman, vice dean of the University of Miami School of
Business, received the honor for his "exemplary service" to
the South American nation, which includes the development of
curriculum and programs that have attracted a large number of
Columbians to the university's graduate business programs.
Berkman received the El Grado de Caballero award of knighthood at
ceremonies at the UM, where he was presented with a scroll and medal
by Dr. Miguel Pinedo Vidal, president of the Colombian senate.
Berkman, a member of the UM faculty since 1977, was honored for
creating the Master of Science in Professional Management program,
designed to provide advanced education to Latin American businessmen
and women in international commerce.
Berkman received his bachelors degree from the University of
Georgia and his masters from New York's St. John's University. He is
founder of the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science and has
written more than 20 research papers and 18 books on management and
marketing. His textbooks are widely used in classrooms in the United
States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia.
El Grado de Caballero is bestowed upon both citizens and
non-citizens who have provided some exemplary service to Columbia.
