The South Dade YMCA, continuing a program of
establishing showcase sports events to generate funds for its
programs, will coordinate a tennis tournament in early June, with
Lucent Technologies signed on as the corporate sponsor.

Massengill.
The tournament, dubbed the YMCA Tennis Classic and set
for Sunday, June 4, will be held at Courts by the Falls, 9355 SW 134
Street, from 11 am to 4 pm.
"We're very happy to have Lucent Technologies
onboard as our primary corporate sponsor," said Tom Den Boer,
executive director of the South Dade YMCA, as he accepted a $3,000
check from the company. "Lucent has been with us on projects
throughout the last year."
Lucent Technologies is a research and development firm
and equipment manufacturer and supplier to the world's communication
companies.
"We're very committed to the Y, not only on short
term, but also on a long-term basis," said Lucent Technologies
Vice President Tom Massengill. "In the last year, we've been able
to support the YMCA golf tournament, sponsor the Y's float in the
Martin Luther King Day Parade and now we've taken another step by
being the title sponsor for the South Miami-Dade YMCA Tennis Classic.
"Lucent tries to support the community both from
a corporate standpoint and by urging its employees to get involved and
participate in events such as this," Massengill continued.
"It's a way of giving back to the community and show respect for
the customers we have, not only here in South Dade, but all over the
United States and throughout the world."
Other tournament corporate sponsors include Sofisa
Bank, Pepsi Cola, Assurant Group and Prudential Insurance. Tony Roma's
Restaurant will provide a buffet lunch for all paid entrants.
Den Boer said the tennis tournament would be a fun day and an
opportunity for families to come together.
"The reason for the tournament is two-fold," said Den Boer.
"It gives us a chance to generate funds to support our financial
aid program and, at the same time, pull corporations, community
leaders, retirees and youngsters all together for one big, fun
event."
Den Boer said the tournament will be divided into
three levels -- the A-level or Competition bracket for USTA registered
and daily league players; the B-level or Recreational bracket for the
occasional player; and the Parent-Child bracket for parents and
children who rarely play tennis, but want to experience the sport and
enjoy the fun of participating in a tournament.
Tournament fees are $30 for individual entry, $50 for
a doubles team, $150 for a doubles team court sponsor, $150 for a
tennis court sponsor, $100 to sponsor a tennis-playing youngster. If
you don't want to play tennis, but want to join the festivities, you
can purchase a lunch ticket for $20, half price for children under 12.
