New park service aide also a lifeguard

BY RON BEASLEY

Wilfredo Montes is a new Park Service Aide in the Pinecrest Parks and Recreation Department. He's also the head lifeguard at Jose Marti Park in downtown Miami.

Montes, 23, works part time for the city of Pinecrest putting in about 25 hours a week. At the same time, as a Water Safety Instructor and lifeguard he works 40 hours a week for the City of Miami.

Montes is married to the former June Bush. And, if her maiden name is familiar, that's because she's a distant relative to former President George Bush and Florida's Governor Jeb Bush.

"My wife was born in Honduras and her grandfather is related to George Bush," he explains. "His parents came from Maine and he was born in Honduras. He wrote a letter to President Bush and it was true."

Montes also was born in Honduras, but emigrated to Chicago with his mother as a baby in 1976. They lived there for 13 years before moving to Miami. He attended Shenandoah Junior High and graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1994.

"My mother came down here to visit my aunt," Montes recalls. "Mother loved the climate and decided this was the place for her."

Montes attended Miami-Dade Community College and now is studying criminal justice at Florida International University. He says he ultimately wants to be a police officer.

When he's not working, Montes says he enjoys collecting remote-controlled model cars, and has more than 50 in his collection. He says he's also interested in buying a remote-controlled helicopter.

"You have to be pretty good at handling them," he says, "because they cost about $2,000. So, if you mess'em up, that's it."

Montes says he and his wife also enjoy traveling and recently journeyed to San Diego.
"We loved it there," he says. "The climate is so nice, it's not that hot, it's not that cold. San Diego is just beautiful."

They also visited Las Vegas, where he was best man in his cousin's wedding. While there, he decided to try his luck at the Blackjack table.

"I don't really gamble," he says, "but, I was there, so I thought I would try the double-deck Blackjack. I won about a thousand dollars."

Not bad for a beginner.
