There are many exciting new products on the market in
the eyewear industry these days and there's a new store in the
Suniland Shopping Center that has them all.
Specs Appeal, at 11417 So. Dixie Highway, has been
open for just six weeks, but already is building a reputation for
carrying the latest in eyewear fashion and technology.
"We do everything here," said Christopher
Williams. "We do clear lenses and sunglass lenses, prescription
and non-prescription; we have drill-mount frameless frames; we do
contact lenses, both colored and clear; we perform eye exams here; and
we have some specialty items that you don't find everywhere, such as
prescription sports goggles for things like racquet ball, basketball
and other sports. We also have prescription dive goggles or swimming
goggles."
Williams, 28, and his wife Karen Chin-A-Young opened
the store after working in the business for other opticians for almost
a decade.
"I've been working in this field for everybody
else, learning the ropes and paying my dues," said Williams.
"I always knew I wanted to do it myself. It was just a matter of
getting the money together and the right location. My wife and I and
my best friend are the staff here."
Williams, a Miami native, grew up in South Miami-Dade
County. He attended Kenwood Elementary, Glades Junior High and Killian
High School, graduating in 1989. He went on to Miami-Dade Community
College and earned his optician's license in 1992. He has been working
in the optical field since graduation.
Specs Appeal Optical carries a broad line of eyeglass
frames and sunglasses, including such brands as Calvin Klein, Armani,
Maui Jim, Revo, Gucci, Polo, Fendi and Modo.
"We just got Oakley sunglass and prescription
lenses," Williams said. "And we have a nice line for
prescriptions called Kawasaki, one of our higher end lines, real
exclusive, excellent, beautiful glasses."
Specs Appeal also has the new bendable frames that
snap back into position if you should somehow bend them, and the new
titanium frames with a magnetic clip-on sunglass made by Elite called
Smart Clip.
"Yes," said Williams, "these two
specialties are hot sellers. You can literally twist the bendable
frames in half and they bend right back into shape. And, the titanium
frames are the strongest, lightest material that you can make frames
out of, and they actually come with a magnetic sunglass clip-on. With
most clips-ons, you actually have to clip the sunglasses on to the
frame. These are magnetic and they actually fall into place with the
need of a retainer clip. And, they're polarized, too."
Williams says Specs Appeal does accept some insurance plans, but not
all.
"We deal with a lot of the insurance companies
that are discount plans," he said. "But, we don't deal with
too many HMOs. If a customer comes in with an insurance that we don't
take, we will try to offer a discount and try to facilitate with the
insurance company to reimburse the customer for what would have been
covered had they gone to a provider."
Williams also says Specs Appeal Optical emphasizes
customer service and strives to make sure everyone leaves the store
satisfied and wearing what they want in eyewear.
"We're different from the big chains, where you
don't get customer service and you don't get personal attention,"
said Williams. "When you come here, you are going to get the
ultimate eye care experience."
