Dr. Leo Lopez

As a young medical student in the early '70s, Dr. Leo Lopez needed to decide on a specialty. He chose to be a cardiologist, interestingly enough because he had a self-described "bad" ear.

"Back then you needed a good ear," Lopez explains, "to be able to listen to the heart sounds and detect patterns. Today there is advanced cardiology equipment that does that, but not then. I wanted to train my bad ear to be a good ear and so I picked the most challenging medical specialty that would help me do just that."

There was interesting logic involved in Lopez's approach. If you are forced to have to work at something very hard in order to overcompensate for a weakness, you will eventually be very good. And so, after 32 years as a practicing cardiologist, Lopez carries with him a wealth of knowledge and experience concerning the delicate treatment of the heart.

Lopez was born in Cuba, where his father worked in pharmaceuticals. At the age of six and seven, he observed the interaction of his father with the doctors, as well as the doctors' relationship with patients. It was this exposure to the medical profession at such a young age that encouraged the youngster to one day become a doctor himself.

He obtained his undergraduate degree, as well as his medical degree, from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He did his clinical training at Jackson Memorial Hospital and his residency in its veteran program. He has spent his career in Miami, working at hospitals such as Mercy, Baptist and Coral Gables.

Lopez today treats patients with heart disease and hypertension. He works with South Miami Hospital, a hospital that is part of the renowned Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute. He also keeps a practice in Coral Gables. When asked what he enjoys most about his work, he responds, "When you are taking care of people, you establish a relationship with your patients. They become one large extended family. It is very rewarding."

When Lopez is not practicing medicine, he enjoys photography, growing orchids and watching sports, especially football. He has lived in Pinecrest for 11 years. He picked the area due to its good schools and peaceful qualities.

Lopez's offices are located at 2601 SW 37th Ave., Suite 701. For further information, you may contact his office at 305-446-7472.
