Sometimes,
the unexpected happens and leaves you with a feeling of amazement.
Such was the case last week when the mail brought a hand-written
correspondence from a person I have not seen or spoken to in more than
25 years. The letterhead identified the writer as Keith F. Simmons,
Vice President and Senior Financial Consultant for the Falls office of
Merrill Lynch. I publish the letter and identify the writer only in
the interest of sharing the goodwill and warm feeling that the words
brought to me.
Dear Grant:
I borrowed $10 or $15 from you
at the 1974 Palmetto High School Junior Prom. I ran out of money and
you gave me enough to pay for the picture (that was taken). Do you
remember that?
I don't believe that I have seen
you since then. I saw your picture in the newspaper and I asked around
if that was you.
Enclosed is a check for an
amount ($75) that I sort of guessed at that would make you whole (and
square the debt). I did look pretty cool in my "powder blue"
tuxedo, even though my kids make fun of that picture.
Congratulations on your
publishing business.
(Signed)
Keith
Thanks, Keith, and for the record, I cashed your
check, took my $15 and donated the balance -- which I assume was
accumulated interest -- to the Howard-Palmetto Khoury League. Grant
