TTA means exciting summers for teens

BY MARISEL OTHON

Ever wonder what you're going to do for the summer? Sure, you can go to the beach, go to the mall, or to the movies.

But, why not try something different this year? Why not go on a tour of California, white water rafting on the Snake River, visit the Smithsonian, take city tours through Boston, New York, Montreal and Toronto, or even board a ship for a seven-day cruise through the Inside Passage of Alaska?

Sounds pretty great, doesn't it? Only one rule -- no parents allowed!

Teen Tours of America is a summer camp experience like no other. Founded by Robert Lenner six years ago with the help of Assistant Director Hilary Arenstein, TTA has managed to grow into one of the most popular summer programs after recognition by the American Camping Association as an outstanding teen travel source.

Lenner, a ninth-grade history teacher, has been involved in teen education and summer camping for more than 25 years. In 1989, he graduated with a law degree from Nova Southeastern University. After practicing law for eight years Lenner decided to return to working with teens. It's Lenner's commitment to the youth and community that keeps him close to TTA.

"Teen Tours of America is a summer camp," Lenner said energetically, "but it's not like your traditional summer camp. We travel to different spots all over the United States and Canada. It's like being on vacation. Kids come and have a great time and parents love it because we instill good values and have fun."

All TTA teens fly from their home city to the starting point of the tour. Then, the tour travels on land by deluxe air-conditioned motor coach.

Everyone gets a good night's rest in their own bed during stays at college dorms, luxury hotels and resorts, or on air mattresses or cots in waterproof tents when camping.

Eating is no problem. TTA dines at a wide array of restaurants and when camping TTA teens help prepare delicious, nutritional meals in the mobile camp kitchen.

This year, Ira Solomon joined the TTA family. Solomon, a marketing and finance graduate, has spent most of his lifetime traveling throughout the world. A volunteer for the High School Youth Mentoring Program, Solomon is active in sports programs and organizations benefiting young people of the community.

"My strength in the TTA family is the amount of traveling I've done," Solomon said. "I can show the kids different things when we go on tours. This partnership with Robert is working out better than we imagined. Robert started something wonderful and it's just incredible."

The TTA staff is comprised of caring, energetic educators and adults whose most endearing quality is their desire to have a rewarding and fun experience with the teens.

This summer, TTA plans a 21-day Western Sprint throughout California and the Southwest, a 42-day Western Adventure combining the best of the Western U.S. and Canada and a 40-day East Coast Amusements tour.

Coming in the summer of 2001, teens may enjoy a New England Journey exploring the mountainous terrain of the inland Northeast region and the rugged coastline of the Atlantic Ocean.
