Students present check to help finance a hospital for manatees
By DEBORAH BALSHAM

Third-grade students at Gulliver Academy recently presented a $350 check to Dr. Gregory Bossart, a professor at the University of Miami and the Miami Seaquarium’s chief consulting veterinarian.

The young students hosted several events to raise the money that will be donated to the building fund of the nation’s first manatee hospital and halfway house, scheduled to be built at the Miami Seaquarium in the near future. The presentation of the check concluded a two-month environmental study program of Florida’s endangered species.

"Saving our Manatees has been a pet project of the third graders for the past several years," said Sandy Baldwin, a teacher at the academy. "The children have taken the plight of the manatee to heart and have focused their energy on working towards solutions."
