Dr. Lars P. Jensen to continue his medical practice in South Miami
By Ron Beasley

The South Miami Diagnostic Center for Women is closing and will re-locate to Coral Gables with a different format and under the direction of Baptist Hospital. One of its key physicians is not making the move and will continue to see patients in the old office location.

Dr. Lars P. Jensen said patients may continue to see him for their OB/GYN, ultrasound and prenatal diagnostics in his same offices at 6140 SW 70 St., with his office hours remaining the same.

"It’s really sad and every patient I speak to is very upset that the Diagnostic Center is closing," he said. "When it opened, the idea was to provide high quality OB/GYN ultrasound service to patients and to have quality female care."

Dr. Jensen said The Diagnostic Center for Women was established in 1982 and owned by a group of Miami OB/GYN doctors. He said that a new law — the Stark Law — basically prohibits self-referral, so the physicians simply gave the Diagnostic Center to Baptist Hospital.

"I think the Diagnostic Center for Women here was too small for Baptist Hospital, and they wanted to have a presence in Coral Gables," Dr. Jensen said. "So, they’ve opened a very large diagnostic center in the Gables and decided to close the Center here in South Miami."

The Coral Gables center will be a general diagnostic center and not exclusively for women, he said.

"When you’re pregnant you’re not ill, patients enjoyed coming to the center because they didn’t have to sit with patients who are ill, as they do at a hospital or a general center. And, it was the little friendly office away from the hospital."

Dr. Jensen, an OB/GYN, ultrasound and prenatal diagnostics specialist, said that while he is staying in the old center’s offices for now, he will not be there for long.

"I’ve joined another group of doctors in South Miami — South Florida Prenatal Medicine. But, we don’t have enough space at the moment in their present offices. So, I’ll stay here for about three months, or however long it takes for us to locate new offices of adequate size," he said.

"And, even after that, I’ll still be in South Miami. It’s just that, at the moment, I don’t know exactly where."
