The South Miami Parks and Recreation Department
promises an exciting summer camp program, with the addition of arts
and culture to its regular camp activities.
Creative Camps, a non-profit arts organization in
South Miami making the program available, bills itself as dedicated to
"bringing out the creative superstar in kids."
Summer Camp 2000 is upgrading the arts and crafts
program. A bit of culture is being added in the form of theater and
drama.
Along with the arts and culture activities, Summer
Camp 2000 will have the usual favorites, such as swimming, organized
sports and games. Children also will have the opportunity to engage in
a three-day soccer clinic provided by the Miami Fusion soccer team.
The After Schoolhouse is opening its facility to the
campers and will allow the campers to use its computers.
Campers will explore the creative realms of arts and
crafts, creative writing, poetry, theater, music and video production.
Adults will teach classes in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The adults
have extensive teaching experience and a background in the arts.
The goal of the Summer Camp 2000 is to introduce arts
and culture to the South Miami youth, a low-income group with limited
access to the arts world.
Last year, about 120 children participated in the
summer camp program and a similar number is expected again this year.
The addition of culture will be a contribution to the
South Miami youth's cultural and social education.
The summer program, which runs from June 19 through
August 4, is for children 6-14. Children 6-9 will be at Murray Park
and children 10-14 will utilize a new location at South Miami Middle
School.
