Beauty on the Edges

By Leslie Bowe

When you're at an intersection, have you ever noticed the impatient drivers who drive around you and others into the grassy swale area trying to make right turns? That type of driver is destroying the hard work the Village is doing to make these grassy areas safer and prettier. Many dollars have gone into street paving, landscaping and curbing. This was done to correct deferred maintenance by Miami-Dade County. Aside from maintenance, the work was done to enhance the safety and quality of our streets, to reduce accidents and unnecessary stress.

The curbing is designed to keep vehicles from violating swale areas, destroying property and potentially causing accidents. Some residents have suggested that we only need to add rocks at these locations, but I disagree. Rocks are not a barrier, plus they are potentially dangerous since they could cause a vehicle to lose control, could even dislodge and be propelled into other vehicles or pedestrians. Most residents that I've talked to like the street curbing and some have even requested that it be installed in areas where the cosy would be born by the people living in the neighborhood. Our feelings are that the installation of curbing and the other improvements that the Village is making are the safest and best ways to improve our roadways and quality of live. My suggestion is that residents take more time during their drives to enjoy the beauty of our community and realize that the improvements are being made for everyone's benefit, because traffic woes impact our daily lives.
