Specs Appeal is a real eye opener

Specs Appeal Optical in Suniland offers an elegant and distinctive alternative to shopping for glasses in one hour.

Spec's Appeal Optical in Suniland offers an elegant, personalized alternative to shopping for glasses and features on-site eye exams by Dr. Lenward McCalla, flanked in the picture above by Karen Chin and storeowner Chris Williams.

"While we are certainly capable of making your glasses in an hour, we prefer not to, because quality and personal attention are our priorities," said Christopher Williams, owner and manager of the new store. "Our motto is that Specs Appeal Optical offers our customers the ultimate eye care experience; we guarantee it."

In an atmosphere of casual elegance, distinguished by solid maple shelves and contemporary furniture, Specs Appeal Optical offers an exclusive selection of the most popular and high-end designer frames. It is one of only a few stores to carry the distinctive Kawasaki and Gold & Wood brands. It also features other hard-to-find frames from Oakley, Maui Jim, Revo, Rayban, Armani, Gucci, Flexon, Calvin Klein, and many others.

"With our Kawasaki line, customers can choose an existing pair of frames or they can design their own to within one millimeter by choosing their own size, shape, lens style and color, and temple options," Williams explained. "This is our premier line, for people who really want to create their own unique look.

"Our Gold & Wood line is also exclusive, because these frames are more like jewelry, made of real gold, white gold, semi-precious stones and real wood."

The store also features a line of the trendy new magnetic eyewear.

"These frames have their own magnetic clip-on sunglasses, but unlike older styles, we carry only the newest titanium and stainless steel designs without the unflattering bar across the bridge," Williams said. "The clip-ons also come already polarized, which is a wonderful feature for cutting through glare. In a typical optical store, this would be an additional charge. We purposely chose this pre-polarized line because it presents the best value to the customer."

Some of the other specialty services offered by Specs Appeal include:

  • Swimming and sports goggles, for adults and children

  • Flexible frames

  • Reading glasses, both customized and ready-made

  • Children's eyewear, including Fisher Price frames

  • Prescription Oakley eyewear

  • Eye exams

  • Clear and color contact lenses

  • And an easy-to-remember phone number: 305-256-EYES (3937).

Pinecrest resident Alan Kristal shops at Specs Appeal for himself and his family.

"I used to shop at the big optical chain stores, but I come here now," he said. "They have a terrific selection, and the prices are comparable. Plus, I enjoy the highly personalized service."

During the half-hour interview for this article, Williams greeted every customer who came in, by name.
"I've always liked working with people, and I fell in love with opticianry because it is both a health and service field," said Chris, a graduate of the Miami-Dade Community College opticianry program and has more than 10 years' professional experience. "It gives me personal satisfaction to help people see."
