Hingston helps Suniland basketball program to continue its success

BY WAYNE HENDRICKS

Pinecrest attorney Robert Hingston has continued the success of a 40-year-old basketball program serving some 300 youngsters at Suniland Park.

"My job is to make sure the kids have a great time since word of mouth is the way the program is promoted," Hingston said.

Without any advertisement, except that of a sign which hangs in the park, attracting youngsters to play in the league is all through the past success of the program.

"Our return ratio is great", said Hingston, who averages between 30 to 40 teams per league.

The ages for youngsters wanting to play basketball in the program range from seven to 15 years and a program for seven-year-olds was started this past season by Hingston. The league began in November and runs until early February.

The kids play 14 games per season, which is about twice a week, and end of the season playoffs determine the champions of each age group. Every kid must play in every game, so Hingston must insure that each coach is distributing fair playing time to each player.

The coaches are volunteers, and most of them have gone through the program in the past. Hingston, who has no kids of his own in the program, said his biggest satisfaction is working with kids and watching them have fun. With the success of the Suniland Basketball program, Hingston should be able to watch the kids have fun for years to come.
