Actors strive to make kids smile

BY KRISTIN BYRNE

The main objective of the Palmetto Players Imagination Theater troupe is to put smiles on the faces of children.

The PPIT is based at Palmetto High School and consists of 24 students who dedicate community service hours to rehearsing short skits and songs for children's entertainment. The troupe then travels to elementary schools throughout Miami-Dade County, giving performances and making kids laugh.

Last year's edition of the theater troupe numbered just 12 members, but they performed for Ernest R. Graham Elementary, Gulfstream Elementary, F.C. Martin Elementary and numerous performances at the Jewish Community Center. This year the troupe doubled in size and quality.

The PPIT actors say that their acting is different from other actors' performances because they interact with their audience of children before, during and after the show.

PPIT Troupe members are taught acting technique by Palmetto High drama coach Rick Adams and bring a strong energy to the stage. The troupe is led by President Kristin Byrne and Vice Presidents Sarah Graber and Marilyn Mena.

Imagination Theater this year will perform at Graham Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, the Jewish Community Center and other unscheduled dates at additional Miami-Dade elementary schools.
