When Southwood Middle School seventh-grader Max Marin
drew a picture of a pelican surrounded by seashells, a sunset on the
water and Florida foliage, he had no idea that his artwork would
become Sofia Bank of Florida's 1999 holiday greeting card.

But, that's exactly what happened during the bank's
first-ever Holiday Card Design Competition, coordinated by Southwood
art magnet teachers Brenda Gilpin and Leslie McKinley.
Marin, a Palmetto Bay resident, topped 150 students at
the school who participated in the two-week contest.
For his work, Marin received a $100 United States
Savings Bond and during ceremonies at the school was honored with a
framed certificate of appreciation from Sofisa Bank President Robert
Londono and Vice President Leif Gunderson.
"It was not easy to select the winning
entry from the many very talented contestants," said Londono. "The
students who participated are to be congratulated, as are the dedicated
teachers, staff and administration at Southwood Middle School."
Framed certificates of appreciation also were awarded to five finalists in
the competition. They were sixth graders Kirsten Dinkens and Angela Stone
and seventh graders Eric Houston, Hanna Ellis and Sydney Graham.
Southwood Middle School and Sofisa Bank of Florida are Dade Partners in
Education.
"Southwood Middle School is an excellent educational model and this
program is a fitting example of how true partnerships can impact our
community in such a positive way," said Sofisa's Gunderson. "We
are proud to be involved in this first-rate program."
