Fishing Report

BY CAPT. DAVE SUTTON

First off, let me apologize for the lack of reports of late. I have had a little accident with a Leatherman Tool. The locking knife blade failed to lock and almost amputated my right pinkie. Surgery was needed to reattach the flexor tendon and nerve trunk so needless to say I have been out of action with a cast up to my elbow. But, I can at least type now without much trouble.

The fishing in Biscayne Bay has gotten a little better since the warming spell this last week of the millennium. We have seen a few cold snaps that the guides at Grand Slam Outfitters has really increased the sitings of bonefish. I was out this Friday the 31st and saw several nice bonefish just inside of Caesar's Creek and even a pair of Permit on the outside flats of Angelfish Creek. The snook were all over the mangroves as we looked for bones, some were very large, 18-plus pounds.

Reports of Mac Attacks out of the Florida Bay coastline have been sounded over and over. I went to Rob Fordyce, one of the premiere guides in So. Florida to confirm. Fishing the wrecks off the mouth of the Shark River has been his steady tris. Between duck hunting trips, he runs up to 20 miles offshore and is in Mac heaven. The Permit, Cobia and snapper are also present, as attested by several other reporting captains. Chumming up the fish and throwing a fly is the big thing I've been hearing.

Fishing Whitewater Bay in the Everglades National Park has been great. The cold fronts have concentrated the fish for a couple of days to make for great action. Reports of twenty fish days are common from the captains like Andy Thompson who fishes the Park as often as he can. The Red's are large and numerous as are the Snook. The Trout have been large, partly due to the season being closed, the captains have said. But, isn't that the norm?

Well, I'll be fishing the Park for the winter Tarpon next week. I'll let you know how we make out. Deal? See ya next week. -- Capt. Dave Sutton
