Step into a whole new universe -- Pizza Universe

BY MARISEL OTHON

Pizza Universe is not your ordinary pizza place and once you try it, you may never want any other type of pizza.

This little take-out pizza shop, at 12223 Pinecrest Parkway (So. Dixie Highway), opened in Pinecrest about three years ago and offers a lot of different styles of pizza, pastas, subs and salads.

When you enter you can see the pizza makers kneading the dough and pouring the tomato sauce over the pizza. They add a touch of cheese, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms or any of the 19 different toppings. Slowly they lift the pizza and slide it into the oven. You can even watch as the pizza rolls out bubbly and crispy.

"I chose this location because it's a good neighborhood and it's safe," Owner Lee Seda said.

Seda was born in Iran, but has lived in Miami for 21 years, where he is a veteran in the pizza business, running five different pizzerias around Miami-Dade County.

If you are looking for specials, Pizza Universe is the place to go. Order two large cheese pizzas and one dozen garlic rolls and you'll pay just $12.99 plus tax. One extra-large cheese pizza with one topping is only $9.99.

If you want something a little more versatile, try the medium Hawaiian pizza with ham & pineapple -- for just $10.15; the medium Deluxe with pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, green pepper and onion -- for just $12.95; or the medium Vegetarian with mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, onion and green olives -- for just $12.95.

Regular pizza prices are $7.95 for a 12-inch medium pizza, which has eight slices, and $1.10 for each extra topping. A 14-inch, 12-slice large pizza is just $9.95 and $1.50 for each extra topping.

And, don't forget to try the Stromboli with six garlic rolls for $6.99 or the Calzone filled with ricotta, mozzarella and one topping, with six garlic rolls, also for $6.99.

"The pizza is really great," said Pinecrest resident Annette Ayala. "But I really like the garlic rolls. They are divine."

If you're not in the mood for pizza you can always order from an array of salads ranging from $2.25 to $4.95. The antipasto is a must with lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, ham, salami, pepperoni, cheese, dressing and served with half-a-dozen garlic rolls for $4.50.

Specialty subs include tuna and cheese, Italian or veggie for $4.99. All cold subs include lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, onion, green pepper, oil-and-vinegar, mayonnaise and pickles. Hot subs include chicken parmigiana, meatballs parmigiana or veal parmigiana, all for just $4.99.

The dinner selection includes lasagna for $6.95; stuffed shells, $6.45; cheese ravioli, $6.45; and Fettuccine Alfredo also for just $6.45. You may order spaghetti with just about anything for $4.75 to $6.50. And, if you're in the mood for something sweet, just ask about desserts. You won't be disappointed here.

Pizza Universe offers free delivery with a $6.00 minimum and if your order doesn't arrive in 30 minutes, it's free. No excuses.
