Biscayne
Towing provides South Florida’s boating community, professional mariners
and recreational boaters alike, with a wide variety of services that are
available 24 hours a day. With
its two locations at Dinner Key and the Port of Miami, Biscayne Towing and
Salvage can easily access boats with a quick response time. The company
offers boaters towing and salvage, as well as several other services that
include battery jumps, groundings and refloating sunken vessels, and marine
environmental protection. Biscayne
Towing and Salvage has the vessels and crew especially equipped and trained
to provide a wide range of services. In fact, with the addition of its
newest vessel, 65-foot supply type salvage vessel, the company has the
capability to provide fuel, transport cargo and long range towing service. “This
capability allows us to service larger yachts, coastal freighters and
offshore facilities such as Fort Jefferson in the Everglades National
Park’s Dry Tortugas,” said Capt. Cory Offutt, owner of Biscayne Towing. Offutt
is a U.S. Coast Guard certified 100-ton vessel master with a towing
endorsement. He is the company’s underwater salvage expert. Captain
Pete Hargreaves is the managing operator of Biscayne Towing’s Dinner Key
location, and is a U.S. Coast Guard certified 100-ton vessel master with
unlimited radar and towing endorsement. His marine experience includes six
years on destroyers in the Navy and nine years as a system support engineer
on Navy vessels for Hughes Aircraft. Offutt
opened the company in 1992, when he focused primarily on commercial
assistance towing, emergency repairs and salvage work. “We
can service and meet the needs of every vessel, no matter how big or
small,” Offutt said. “We are capable of towing anything from a jet ski
up to a 180-foot freighter.” Underwater
services offered by Biscayne Towing include recovery of wayward ground
tackle, underwater video survey, in-water propeller and rudder replacement,
underwater patching and emergency repair. The company also floats sunken
vessels and will retrieve valuables from sunken vessels. Biscayne
Towing is committed to responsible salvage and towing techniques that are
environmentally safe. For example, as a licensed towing company in the
Biscayne National Park, Biscayne Towing is required to follow
environmentally acceptable techniques and salvage procedures for refloating
grounded vessels. “Not
just anybody can do this type of work. You must have the experience and be
very environmentally conscious when doing this type of work and providing
this service,” Offutt said. “We feel that we are very environmentally
conscious in our towing and salvage techniques.”
The
company is an approved Discharge Cleanup Organization (DCO) by Florida’s
Department of Environmental Protection. Since its beginning, Biscayne Towing
has dealt with numerous oil and fuel spills. Biscayne
Towing is an affiliated tower for BoatU.S. Boat Owners Association of the
United States, which is the largest organization of recreational boaters in
the country, with over 500,000 members. “Our
capabilities allow us to provide services and towing to any vessel, any
size, anywhere,” Offutt said. “We are experienced, having been around
for so many years, and we have the best equipment in the business.” Biscayne
Towing is available 24 hours a day. For more information, call 305-358-1486
