Gulliver Academy first gradeers celebrated 100 days of
school recently by dressing as 100 year olds and participating in a of
day learning activities centered around the number 100. Following a
parade around the school, the four classes completed a writing
assignment on "When I'm 100 years old."
The
first-graders read books related to the number 100, then measured 100
footsteps, 100 inches and 100 centimeters, after first estimating the
possible lengths. Students enjoyed a 100th day snack after each child
contributed a bag of 100 edible foods mixed together into a trail mix.
Some students made a special "counter-pillar," which taught
them how to order numbers while creating a cute caterpillar.
One class measured all students in inches on the
classroom growth chart and then the youngsters had to find a partner
whose combined total measured almost 100 inches. The first graders
enjoyed day 100 and the integrated activities each classroom teacher
shared with her students.
