I Did Botox
an anonymous account of a Botox experience

I'm only in my late thirties, and the idea of doing anything "cosmetic" before age 70 was unspeakable in my family. When my grandmother got collagen injections for "mouth lines" around this age (she had debated about it for years), we treated it as some deep, dark family secret never to be exposed.

A lot of my girlfriends "do" Botox. Some would come up to me and eagerly ask, "Notice anything different?"

Truthfully, I did notice that their foreheads looked smooth -- no lines -- and they had a general "rested" look, as if they had just returned from a two-month cruise in the south of France. Why not fight the exhausted, too-many-car-pools, not-enough-hours-in-the-day look and try it?

Botox is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, originally used in the 1980's to treat opthalmologic disorders.

Getting Botox injections was a little painful, like a prick from a needle that stayed in a little too long. Afterwards, I felt like I couldn't move certain parts of my face properly, especially when I smiled. This effect was only noticed by me, however. It was more of a feeling and not at all painful. After a couple of days, I forgot, the feeling wore off and I enjoyed the look of having slightly raised

eyebrows and a more open, brighter appearance. No matter how tired I felt, I didn't look it. To be honest, no one commented about me looking any different. I just felt like I did.

The Botox toxin acts as a nerve impulse blocker that prevents muscles from contracting. The injections involve temporary paralysis of certain muscles, with results that mimic a non-surgical brow lift. It is a non-invasive procedure and currently not proved to be harmful in any way, especially when performed by an experienced doctor. Some possible side effects: drooping eyelids and eye-associated problems. Given all this, will I keep it up? I suppose it depends on the price I am willing to pay for feeling tired but looking good.
