I
know, you have all been anxiously waiting for my next column. But to
be honest with you I have been too busy 'trying to whip a group of
nine-year-old boys into a championship baseball team. Well, You
guessed it my team is not doing so well so I returned to the beat.
Thank you to those of you who provided the highlights and here we go
.........
HIGHLIGHTS:
In Howard-Palmetto Khoury League Midget 11 action (12 year olds) the
White Sox defeated the Red Sox 12 8. Two home runs in the fourth
inning, a three run home run by Jordan Simkovic and a towering solo
shot by Peter Villafnerte broke open a close game. Hector
"Tice" Diaz also had three hits for the winners, and Stephen
Carl" contributed two hits apiece. The Red sox were led by Joey
Malca, who had two hits, and by Steffen Johnson, who scored two runs.
Martin Simkovic, Victor Montesino and Gary Alvo coach the White Sox.
In YMCA Boys Basketball action, the Timberwolves (7
and 8 year olds) are the team to watch ... Word is that Deon Bush, who
is in first grade at Coral Reef Elementary School and may only be 6
years old, is a scoring machine. I understand that he plays like a kid
2-3 years older and even struts like a pro after he scores.. The way
things are going these days you may want to see him and get his
autograph soon while its still free as a professional contract may not
be too far off. Travis Wasser has a sprained finger but that wont stop
him from playing, he is improving every week as the
"Energizer" bunny has nothing on him. Nate Schettino scored
his first points last week and is getting more comfortable as he goes.
Harrison Murphy is the team leader on defense as he loves to grab the
ball and tie up the shooter. Adrian Merino is a force inside as he
rebounds with the best. Finally, Tommy Heffernan fresh out of football
and hip-hoP uses an aggressive approach and also finesses when he
plays. Other kids on the team that are improving are: Ni,k Fante, Mike
Matos, Jordan Thomas, and Sean Kett. Games are played at Coral Reef
Park, Richmond Park, Gouldes Gym and Surmiland Park.
And finally, who said girls cannot compete with boys?
Certainly not Natalie Puftal who is one of two girls playing in the
Howard-Palmetto Atom 1 National Division (7 year olds). Natalie plays
on the Mets and is coached by Howard Levrant. We are advised that in
her last game vs. the marlins she led her team to a win by hitting a
triple with the bases loaded. in the field, she made three Putouts and
completed a double play. outstanding! HowardPalmetto Khoury League
games are played at Suniland and Coral Reef Parks.
